BJP leader kicks pregnant woman in Nadia, arrested

Kolkata: A BJP leader was arrested in Nadia for kicking a pregnant woman, after which she suffered a miscarriage. The incident took place at Tatla village in Sadhanpara gram panchayat 2 area under Dhubulia police station on Tuesday night.

Sources said that the woman and her family members had protested against the high-pitched blaring of loudspeakers as the Madhyamik examination was going on.

The woman, Maya Santra, was admitted to Dhubulia Gramin hospital and was later shifted to Krishnanagar Hospital. The three-month-old fetus she was carrying died on Wednesday. The woman’s brother and brother-in-law were also allegedly assulated by the leader and his men, who were holding a musical programme in the area.

After the miscarriage, the woman’s husband Sanjoy Santra lodged a compliant with the Dhubulia police station against the accused BJP leader Palash Biswas and his associates. Mr Biswas is the head of the local panchayat. The police arrested Mr Biswas and one of his associates.

The local BJP leadership, however, denied Mr Biswas’ presence on the spot at the time of incident. Mr Biswas, while he was produced at Krishnanagar court, told reporters , “I have been framed because of the vindictive politics of the Trinamul Congress.”

Some Madhyamik students in the area, who were eyewitnesses to the incident, also alleged that the BJP leader was present at the spot when the woman was assaulted.
