Calcutta High Court

Kolkata: The Calcutta high court has ordered the police to hand over the bodies of the murdered CPI(M) worker and his wife to their son. The couple — Debu Das and Usha Das — was burnt alive at their home during an alleged attack by the Trinamool Congress workers at Namkhana in South 24 Parganas hours before the Panchayat Elections got underway on May 14.

A case was initiated by the police against ten persons on murder charge. The couple’s bodies were sent for post-mortem. Trouble however began over the handing over of the bodies. The couple’s son Dipankar alleged that he was not handed over his parents’ bodies which were sent from the morgue of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital to the one at Diamond Harbour Hospital.

He moved the high court to get his parents’ bodies for last rites. Dipankar also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into his parents’ murder. His lawyer Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya argued before Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty that the bodies were not handed over due to failure of the police. On Friday the judge ordered the police to hand over the bodies by 6 pm.
