Kolkata: Teen killed in building collapse

Kolkata: A teenaged girl was killed in yet another incident of old house collapse in the city in the early hours of Saturday. The victim, Puja Kumari Gupta (18), was a resident of Tala in north Kolkata.

A dilapidated house in ward no 1 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation beside the Tala post office off BT Road collapsed suddenly at around 2.15 am.

Puja, who was asleep inside the one-storeyed house, got trapped. She was taken out with fatal injuries by the fire brigade and disaster management group personnel from the debris.

She was rushed to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The body was sent for post-mortem. No one else was injured in the incident.

According to the KMC, the house was declared dangerous many years ago but it was not vacated by its residents. Besides, the house was locked in a legal battle over the share of property between its owners.

This was the second incident of house collapse in the city. On September 5, three members of a family were killed after the portion of an old building collapsed at Posta in Burrabazar.
