Kolkata: A Bidhannagar court on Sunday turned down the bail plea of state BJP leader Joy Prakash Majumdar, accused in a case of fraud, and remanded him in police custody for three days.

Mr Majumdar was arrested Saturday on charges of criminal conspiracy, fraud and cheating following a complaint by one Arup Ratan Roy, who accused him of cheating Rs 7.20 lakh in August last year.

The BJP leader, while coming out of the court, questioned the authenticity of the complainant and alleged that he was a victim of "political conspiracy".

"It is a baseless allegation against me. It is a big conspiracy. This is a game by Didi (chief minister Mamata Banerjee," the BJP state vice-president said.

Meanwhile, the complainant admitted he was never a TET candidate and had filed the complaint on behalf of his brother.

Mr Majumdar's lawyer Tirthankar Roy appealed for the bail, arguing that a case had been filed in the Supreme Court to take up the cause of the protesting candidates, the reason for which Mr Majumdar had allegedly taken the money.

But the court rejected the plea and remanded the BJP leader in police custody until January 18.
