Kolkata: A Trinamul Congress worker was shot dead at a soiree in Nadia due to faction feud on Sunday night, hours before party supremo and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to the district.

Shantanu Biswas, the victim, was an activist of the ruling party’s youth wing.

The soiree was underway in front of Purbachal Girls’ High School at KBM area in Chakdaha at around 11 pm.

Shantanu was standing on the dais while the last artist of the programme was singing. He suddenly received a bullet injury on his left chest.

Profusely bleeding Shantanu slumped on the dais. He was rushed to JNM Hospital in Kalyani where he was declared brought dead. The body was sent for post-mortem. The police initiated a case on murder charge. The victim was the secretary of the club which had organised the soiree. He ran a mobile repairing shop near the market off Chakdah railway station.

According to eye-witnesses, a youth called Kalu Roy went near the dais and opened fire on Shantanu before escape.

Kalu is also known to be a Trinamul worker in the locality.

Chakdah Town Trinamul Youth president Sadhan Biswas said, “Shantanu was our party worker.” The victim’s wife Soma claimed that he fell victim to a feud within the party.
