Kolkata: Describing BJP president Amit Shah’s rally as a “flop show” the Trinamul Congress has threatened to take legal action against him if he would not apologise for allegedly insulting the state in his speech which ripped into the Trinamul Congress rule. It also called him the “dacoit of corruption and rioting.” The state Congress also took a dig at Mr Shah over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue.

Hours after Mr Shah's rally Trinamul Rajya Sabha MP and the party's national spokesperson Derek O'Brien alleged, “Today Mr Shah held a flop show and a flop meeting in Kolkata. He has insulted Bengal. He has dishonoured Bengal. He does not understand. The civilisation, norms, ethos, pathos and good tastes of Bengal...how can these be taught to him?”Slamming Mr Shah, Mr O'Brien claimed, “He does not understand the culture of Bengal. He has even insulted the culture of Bengal. He lied. We will take legal action if he does not tender apology say within 24 or 48 or 72 hours? There must be a limit to decency and honour. You are a dacoit of corruption and riot. This kind of politics, which you did in Gujarat and elsewhere, will not be tolerated here.”

The Trinamul MP added, “He comes for a day to insult Bengal and he flees. This can not happen. So here is the straight message from the Trinamul to him: Apologise or face legal action. Moreover our stand over the NRC is very clear. It is not an issue of Bengal. It is an issue of Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar and Assam.”

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury argued that peace prevailed in Assam after an agreement there.

“Mr Shah is speaking about introducing NRC in West Bengal. The BJP has several states in hand. Let them introduce it in those states first. Let them bring a nationwide ordinance on it. But they are not doing it. They are just threatening the people. Our chief minister Mamata Banerjee is doing the same here. She is doing politics over the exclusion of 40 lakh people,” he claimed.
