Kolkata: An undertrial prisoner tried to escape from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday night. Niraj Sau (20), the accused, was however caught soon.

He was admitted to the male ward of the state government-run hospital in Tala after he fell ill at Dum Dum Central Jail where he consumed bleaching powder in the afternoon aparently to commit suicide, according to sources.

At around 10.30 pm Niraj was found missing for a long time in his bed by the nurses who alerted the cops, the sources revealed adding that while leaving his bed he had told them that he was going to the toilet.

Meanwhile, Niraj broke the glass of the toilet at the sixth floor and sneaked out. He was seen scaling down the water-pipe, sources disclosed.

Seeing him the police personnel and hospital staff started shouting. Niraj jumped the terrace of the first floor and took shelter in a room where he was caught by the police.
