Man arrested for stealing card data to buy phone

Kolkata: The Bidhanngar city police’s cyber crime police station apprehended a man on Wednesday night for committing data theft from someone’s Bajaj Finance card and purchasing a mobile phone using the data. The accused, Partha Dey, was arrested from his residence at Telinipara in Titagarh.

According to sources, the complianant, Pranab Banerjee of CIT Road Entally, who has Bajaj Finance card for shopping, noticed a few days back that Rs 2,000 was deducted as EMI from his account at a private bank, which is connected with that card. He also informed the police that he had not provided any of his bank information details to any person. On enquiry, the customer learnt that his card has been used for purchasing a mobile set worth Rs 22,000 from a leading electronic shop based in Salt Lake AE Block.

“We have learnt that an employee of the finance company had passed on the data of Mr Banerjee to the accused. The Bajaj Finance card requires card number, bank name and phone number for purchase. The OTP concept is not there,” an investigating officer said.

The sleuths are also looking for the person who stole the data and passed it on to the accused.
