Kolkata: Senior Trinamul Congress minister Subrata Mukherjee on Saturday said that the people of Kolkata would give a fitting reply to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, if he visits the city, in response to the alleged manhandling of a Trinamul delegation by the police personnel at Silchar Airport after they arrived there to attend a convention on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in wake of the drop-out of around 40 lakh people in the neighbouring state.

Leading a protest rally by Trinamul workers to observe Black Day against the BJP at Gariahat in south Kolkata, Mr Mukheree said, “There has been no instance of any such attack on a delegation of MPs and MLAs. I could not imagine any civilised government can do it. We will tackle it. If their CM comes here on a tour anytime, he will get a fitting reply also. We will organise massive protests. Bengal will come to a halt.”

Training guns on the BJP on the NRC issue, the state panchayat minister alleged, “It is unprecedented in the whole world the way the innocent people are being subjected to torture by the BJP. Only the Nazi brigade unleashed such atrocities before the World War II. They have made 40 lakh people homeless to throw them out. Centre is directly supporting them. We are not only limited to the protests. We are creating public opinion. Like Bengali and non-Bengali have the right to live in Kolkata, they also have rights to stay in any corner of the country.
