West Bengal: Caught by police, man consumes acid, dies

Kolkata: A youth committed suicide by consuming acid inside a police investigation centre at Bhatora in Howrah on Saturday afternoon. Bibhas Mondal, the deceased aged around 25, was a taxi-driver at Bharatmata Colony Salkia. He had an affair with a married woman for the past one year ever since they met each other during a trip to Digha. 

At around 1 pm Bibhas had come to meet her. The woman's husband stays in New Delhi for his work. Bibhas was however caught by some local residents who thrashed him for having an affair before he was handed over to the police. He was then taken to the Bhatora investigation centre which falls under the Bagnan police station jurisdication. 

To try and evade his arrest, the accused had gone to the toilet dodging past the police’s glare and had consumed acid from a bottle which was kept there, preliminary investigation revealed. 

Bibhas was rescued and was taken to Bagnan Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police sent Bibhas’ body for a post-mortem. The cops detained the woman and his relative for questionning following a complaint by Bibhas’ family.
