Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday launched a murder case against unknown people in connection with the child trafficking racket it unearthed a few days ago in North 24 Parganas’ Baduria. “The murder case has been initiated following exhumation of the remains of two infants on November 25 from the campus of Sudhir Memorial Trust NGO at Maslandapur,” a senior CID official said.

On November 25, the CID rescued 10 babies, all girls, from ‘Purbasha’, a home for an old age home for the mentally challenged, and took them to the ESI hospital where they were admitted. Doctors there had said the health condition of the babies was not sound because of the “negligent treatment” meted out to them at the hideouts.

Following investigations, the CID arrested 20 people over several days, including four doctors.

On Tuesday night, the agency arrested a medical practitioner and a BJP leader Dilip Ghosh who had earlier worked at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. He was arrested along with another medical practitioner for playing an “active role” in the child trafficking racket through Shree Krishna Nursing Home at College Street with which he was associated for the last 21 years.

“We have learnt that the said nursing home was involved in an adoption as early as in 1982. We are checking the legality of the adoption,” an official said.
