58 inmates of orphanage to record their statements

Nashik: In the probe of a case related to the rape of a minor orphan, all the 58 inmates of the state-recognised orphanage in Peth tehsil, Nashik were shifted to Nashik city and the police is to record their statements. It has been alleged that the son of the orphanage’s director raped the minor.

After Nashik Womens and Child Welfare officer Surekha Patil visited the orphanage and decided to shift the inmates to Nashik to avoid any possibility of them getting influenced at the orphanage, superintendent of police (rural), Sanjay Darade said on Friday that the statements of the girls would be recorded. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Women’s Commission chairwoman Vijaya Rahatkar told The Asian Age on Friday that the existing system should be strengthened and the laws should be implemented to avoid such incidents while the Commission was conducting a training campaign of Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which is mandatory in every sector.

Readers may recall that a survivor has accused the orphanage director’s son of raping her since last three years with active complicity of his mother, as she refused to pay heed to the complaints of the survivor.

Cases were registered on Tuesday and the accused Atul Shankar Albad (25) and his mother Sushila (45), who is director of Nashik Zilla Adivasi Mahila Hakk Samiti (NZAMHS) are in police custody till July 24. Cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act have been registered.

The survivor had come to the orphanage in 2013 when she was 15 years old and Atul allegedly began raping her for three years till she was shifted to Nashik remand home after turning 18.
