Pune: Doctors at Pune's Sassoon hospital have brought new meaning to the life of a teenaged girl by creating a vagina, cervix and uterus in her body. The 18-year-old had no vagina or cervix (opening of the vagina into the uterus) previously.

Dr R.A. Bhosale, senior professor, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Sassoon hospital, Pune, said, “The girl (single) was admitted to Sassoon as she continually complained of stomachache. After all necessary medical tests, we found that she had no vagina or cervix, and her uterus was in two parts joined to two ovaries with fallopian tubes. When she got periods, blood from her uterus went into her fallopian tubes which got full.”

“As there was no vagina, blood could not pass out and hence, she used to have stomach ache regularly. Sometimes, blood would go to her stomach causing more pain,” he said.

“Two months ago in June, we conducted a procedure called vaginoplasty which means we created a vagina with the help of the skin on her thighs and fixed it in her body between her anus and urethra (from where urine passes), later discharging her. We again called her in August for subsequent procedures,” he added.
