Eight-month-old sexually assaulted by her cousin

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, an eight-month-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a relative at her residence in Shakurpur Basti area on Sunday. The baby suffered severe injuries to her vital organs and is undergoing treatment at the Kalawati Saran Hospital, said the police on Monday.  

According to police, the parents were at their workplaces during the incident and left the infant at home with other family members. The family lives on the first floor while the other family members live on the ground floor. The accused Suraj (28), a cousin of the child, took her to other part of the building on the pretext of playing with her. Later, when the child’s mother who works as a maid in a nearby locality returned home, she found the child in a pool of blood. She immediately rushed her to a hospital.

A senior police official, “The mother found the baby unconscious and bleeding from her private parts. The child’s father, who works as a labourer was also informed. The hospital informed police about the case.” During preliminary investigation, Suraj was questioned. He ran away after the questioning. Later, he was traced to the locality by th epolice staff and detained. “He confessed to his involvement in the crime. He is an unmarried man and the elder son of child’s uncle. The child’s family used to leave her at home with other cousins and family members while going out to work. A case has been registered at the Subhash Place police station. The accused has been booked under relevant sections,” said the police.
