New Delhi: An initiative that will boost morale of women police officers and instill a sense of safety and security in the denizens, the Delhi police will put more women police brigade on patrol duties on the city streets.

With a motto on their sleeves that they are no less than a male bastion, the women police officers have geared up to take the city’s safety and security in hands. Leading the group, the fierce lady cop, Ms Sangam, along with a team of three other women constables are currently patrolling the streets, markets, colleges, schools, residential areas of R. K. Puram and South Campus, last week.

Speaking to Age Correspondent, a proud additional deputy commissioner of police, South , Chinmoy Biswal, said, “The only intent behind introducing women police officers to patrol the city streets at night, is to tell them that they are no less than me or their counterparts. The time has come that they come out of the shackles and rule the roost just like their fellow policemen.”

He also said, “It is just the beginning. As of now, there are only two police stations where the exercise has been undertaken.  Shortly, the scheme will be expanded to all the 14 police stations with a ful-fledged team. The bikes are being ready for our women police officers.”

With only a week passed-by, the drive has gained popularity in the public. The residents of South Delhi, especially women are elated and relieved to see the women offiers guarding them. According to Saroj Jain, a resident of Shanti Niketan said, “It’s proud to see a woman taking a lead and patrolling my area. Earlier, I was apprehensive to approach the police, but now it’s relieving to see them.”

The senior police officer, Mr. Biswal told Asian Age that as of now a team of four women police are patrolling the two stations of South Delhi. But in the coming week, the strength will increase. The women ptarolling police visits paying guests accommodations where young girls and working women stay, the officers visit them, talk to them and give boost to public-police partnership.”

Seeing women police patrolling on bikes would not only propel people to approach them but will also increase the visibility of police in public. “When required, these teams will swing into action, as they have been trained to deal with any untoward situation. They will be in constant touch with the police stations and have been provided with various communication gadgets,”the officer added.
