New Delhi: The roads of the national capital over the past nine years have claimed the lives of more than 16,000 people.

As per the official data released, the cops said that the city has conveniently left behind Mumbai and Bengaluru.

According to the data, the roads in the capital witnessed maximum number of deaths reportedly due to drink and drive.

Reports suggest that more than 40,000 simple accidents were reported in the national capital. Many factors have been attributed for these accidents, with the major one being drunken driving. Also, the T-junctions have proved notorious, claiming to be the most unsafe spots on the capital's streets having seen as many as 1,008 accidents in 2016 followed by 837 at Y-junctions.

The arm junctions have witnessed more than 742 accidents, while as many as 270 accidents at roundabouts were witnessed.

The Delhi Traffic Police has intensified punitive action against drivers who are caught driving while intoxicated.

The Southern Range Traffic recently prosecuted 234 persons for drunken driving. Over the years, the number of road accidents in the capital has decreased, with systematic analysis of accidents, increased police presence at intersections, special night patrolling and stern punitive action against drunk drivers being the driving factors.

In some cases two vehicles collide with each other, while in others drivers are found to be negligent.

Sometimes a small accident turns fatal among's two wheelers as they are not wearing helmets. Under-age driving has seen a spurt on capital's streets where the minors without obtaining licenses were seen jeopardising pedestrian and in a few cases have ended up in fatal accidents.
