16 Nepalese girls being sent to Gulf nations freed
The police said these women were promised jobs in Kuwait.
New Delhi: Sixteen women allegedly trafficked from Nepal to be sent to the Gulf countries were rescued by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and the Delhi police from southwest Delhi’s Munirka area on Wednesday. The police was informed by DCW at around 9 pm on Tuesday, the police said.
Subsequently, the police conducted a raid in Munirka at around 1.30 am early Wednesday morning, following which 16 women were rescued. Among the 16 women rescued, 14 are married, the police said, adding that they were aged between 20 and 40 years.
The women’s commission has alleged that these women were brought to Delhi on the pretext of employment but were housed in a small room for several days.
The police said these women were promised jobs in Kuwait.
The state women’s panel alleged that the traffickers had been running this racket at Munirka for last eight months and several women had already been sent aboard.
The Delhi police said these women were brought to Delhi by a Nepali man who also stayed in Munirka. He had allegedly kept the passports of these women with him.
A case has been registered in the matter, the police said, adding that a search is underway to nab the Nepali man. Officials said that an FIR has been registered in police station Vijay Vihar and the girls have been sent to a shelter home.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal said, “The place from where we rescued these girls is only 500 metres away from the police station. I can not understand that how police know nothing about trafficking activities, while they are so close to this place but DCW gets information.”
“Trafficking in Delhi will continue to increase until accountability of police is not fixed. I have requested to Rajnath Singhji many times, and again I am requesting him to set up a high level committee in Delhi, Union home minister, lieutenant-governor of Delhi, CM of Delhi, police commissioner and Delhi Commission for Women should be part of it. The committee must meet at least twice a month. A big trafficking racket is working in Delhi and all the people included in it must be arrested so that big names in this racket can be identified. Personal responsible for human trafficking in Delhi must be given stringent punishment so that this business can be stopped,” she added.
