New Delhi: The Delhi police has finally lodged an FIR against unknown persons for writing threat letters to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Saurabh Sharma.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activist has received three letters in which he was threatened to quit JNU or to face dire consequences.

"I know you are counting on him (the PM). But he will never be back in power. And you will never be able to bring a change in JNU. I warn you not to contest any elections or you will die," the accused had written in the letter. The police said that they have lodged an FIR under Sections 506 and 507 and are looking into the matter.

However no arrests have been made so far.ABVP leader and former JNUSU joint secretary Sharma said, two separate FIRs have been registered on the basis of threat letters.

Mr Sharma also added, "I have received a total of five letters in my hostel room from June 14 to 20. We are not afraid of such threat letters. What we demand of the police is to inquire into the case and take stringent action on the people behind these letters."

He further alleged, It is very evident from the letters that Afzal gang has gone intolerant and trying to crush our freedom of expression and the right to dissent.

" We have also demanded to JNU administration to look into this matter and get CCTV installed on public places in order to make strong security arrangements. We have also given a complaint in this regard to Vice Chancellor, " he added.
