New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday asked the Delhi government to take appropriate action against those places of worship violating the guidelines on noise pollution.  

It asked the government and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to ensure that religious places in east Delhi strictly adhere to the guidelines and take action in case any violation was found. 

The green panel was hearing a plea filed by NGO Akhand Bharat Morcha alleging that illegal use of loudspeakers at such places adver-sely affected the health of the residents living in the vicinity.

According to Central Pollution Control Board, the permissible noise level was 45 decibels during the night in residential areas and 55 decibels in commercial areas. 

The plea, filed through advocate R.R. Malik, alleged that the activities of some mosques were vilating the Environment (Prote-ction) Act, 1986 and the Noise Pollution (Regula-tion and Control) Rules, 2000.

During the hearing, the counsel for various religious places assured the tribunal that they would abide by the NGT direction and ensure that there is no violation.
