Najeeb Ahmed

New Delhi: The Delhi police filed a chargesheet against one Mohammad Samim, who had allegedly made ransom calls to the family of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, claiming that Mr Ahmed was in his captivity. The chargesheet was filed in the court of CMM Sumit Dass. The court has so far not taken cognisance of the chargesheet. Samim, who is already in judicial custody, was produced before the court. The court extended his judicial custody to May 29.

Mr Samim had allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh for Ahmed’s release from his family. The Delhi Police had arrested him from Maharajaganj in UP after Najeeb’s family complained to the police about the ransom call. The police had recovered five different SIM cards from his possession which were used to make the ransom call to the family. Mr Samim was earlier involved in the murder of a class-12 student that took place in 2015.

In November last year, a guard at JNU’s Mahi Mandavi Hostel, where Najeeb was staying, had received a letter that claimed that the missing student was in Aligarh, captive. The letter, however, turned out to be fake. Najeeb went missing in October 2016, reportedly after clashing with ABVP.

A case under Section 365 of IPC was registered in this respect and later the case was handed over to the crime branch.
