New Delhi: Suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad’s wife Poonam on Sunday joined the Aam Aadmi Party, ending months of speculation. Before joining the ruling dispensation in Delhi, Ms Azad was the Delhi BJP unit’s spokesperson and its vice-president in the past.

Soon after she joined the party in the presence deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and others senior leaders, the AAP said Ms Azad will play a key role in next year’s elections in Punjab. While holding Union finance minister Arun Jaitley responsible for her quitting the BJP, Ms Azad said she saw a bright future for youth in the AAP.

Her husband Kirti had launched a scathing attack on Mr Jaitley over alleged corruption in Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) during the minister’s tenure as its head.

Earlier in the day, Ms Azad met chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Welcoming her to AAP, Mr Sisodia said she has been a champion for aam aadmi’s rights and has been fighting for the issues of people. Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said Ms Azad will be given an important responsibility to play in the forthcoming Punjab Assembly election. After joining the AAP, Ms Azad said, “I see a future, especially for the youth, in AAP. The reason why I quit BJP is because we were mistreated by Arun Jaitley.”
