New Delhi: The Delhi government will soon call a meeting of all resident welfare associations (RWAs) and market associations to discuss and finalise modalities of installing CCTV cameras across the city, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday.

The move comes a day after Mr Kejriwal claimed that a committee set up by lieutenant-governor (L-G) Anil Baijal has recommended “mandatory permission from police” to install CCTV cameras.

“The Delhi government will soon call a meeting of all RWAs and market associations in Delhi to discuss and finalise modalities of installing CCTV cameras across the national capital,” Mr Kejriwal tweeted.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the chief minister claimed that mandatory provisions for installation of CCTV cameras would increase bribery.

“What will the police see before giving CCTV licences? On what basis will the police give licence? It will only increase bribery. It is a huge blow to women safety because all existing cameras in Delhi will have to be removed till they obtain license n all new CCTVs will have to wait for license (sic),” Mr Kejriwal had tweeted.

A six-member panel formed by Mr Baijal in May, is likely to regulate the installation of CCTVs in private and government buildings in Delhi, a source had said.

The committee, which is headed by Delhi principal secretary (home) Manoj Parida, was in the process of preparing the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the installation and monitoring of the CCTV cameras across the national capital.
