According to the police, the victim’s mother said she came to know about the incident when she found her daughter crying in her room on Monday night.

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a stepfather raped his 14-year-old daughter in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The irate mother of the victim approached the police and they arrested the accused under Sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC and POCSO Act.

At present, the girl is presently six-and-a-half months pregnant, the police said. According to the police, the victim’s mother said she came to know about the incident when she found her daughter crying in her room on Monday night.

The police said the victim’s mother, who married the accused, 38, separated from her first husband since he was an alcoholic.

In 2017, the man had molested his elder stepdaughter and threatened to attack her if she told anyone about it. However, she approached the nearest police station and filed a complaint against him and the accused was jailed.

After he was released, the accused went back home and convinced the family to allow him to live with them again. Thirsting for revenge, he raped his younger stepdaughter when his wife was not at home, the police said.

The police said the accused worked as a plumber and regularly thrashed his wife. As per 2017 NCRB data, in nearly 95 per cent rape cases, the accused is known to the victim. The report showed that in 2016, a total of 38,947 rape cases were filed in the country under Pocso  Act and Section 376 and other sections.

Out of 630 cases, the victims were allegedly raped by their grandfather, father, brother and son, while in 1,087 cases the accused were acquaintances.
