Four cops assaulted by drunk men in Northwest Delhi

New Delhi: Four policemen attached to the Bharat Nagar police station in Northwest Delhi were allegedly attacked, assaulted and brutally beaten while an on-duty ASI’s hand was bitten off by one of the drunkards after the police asked the accused not to drink in public place. The situation turned grim when the three men gheraoed the policemen and allegedly threatened to kill them. However, the cops were saved after one of them managed to raise alarm and called for additional force. The incident took place on Wednesday night around 9 pm in Wazirpur slum in front of Jhankari School. The accused have been identified as Shamsher (52), his son Kaleem, and Golu (22). All the accused are said to be scrap workers who work in a nearby WPAI factory. The injured policemen have been identified as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Santosh, head constable (HC) Dharamveer, constable Yogesh and one other. During the assault, ASI Santosh sustained injuries on his head, face, and arms. One of the accused, in a fit of rage, had bitten off his arms. All the four were taken to a nearby hospital. The trouble began when ASI Santosh along with HC Dharamveer, constable Yogesh and one other were conducting night patrol in Wazirpur area of Bharat Nagar. As the men in khaki reached near Jhankari School, they saw four persons consuming liquor on the road in public. ASI Santosh and HC Dharamveer approached them and questioned them about their doings. The accused Shamsher allegedly abused the policemen and asked them to go away.

“Hearing the commotion when Yogesh and one other rushed to their rescue, the three men started beating the policemen with bare hands and liquor bottles. During the ongoing scuffle, when ASI Santosh grabbed Kaleem, one of the accused bit his hand off in order to release his associate. The accused also tore their uniform. One of the police constables, who managed to get out of the fight, called the Bharat Nagar police station for additional force, who in turn rushed to the spot and overpowered the unruly men,” said a police officer.
