Since exploring the real flavour of Chettinad and its remote areas were on our bucket list, we headed to Karaikudi, which is at the heart of Chettinad. We checked into The Bangala, which is known for its traditional fare. The meals were cooked retaining the authenticity of the signature sea food, and were scrumptious. We ate at the Karavali, and dug into lots of fresh crab, prawns, mutton, idiyappam. A haven for seafood lovers, Chettinad offers gourmet delight, indeed.

It was a three day tour, and as someone who believes in discovering a place with locals, I was accompanied by a local friend who showed me around. The ancestral Chettinad houses are palatial, and the intricate and old school architecture is such a sight!

Chettinad is rich in myriad aspects, but it's also important to keep the sentiments and perspectives of the locals in mind. The interiors are dotted with quaint villages, so dress conservatively and pick airy breathable fabrics to be comfortable despite the humidity.

As a designer, I have an eye for fabrics. A short trip to explore myriad weaves, and looms (handlooms and powerlooms) made this getaway more of a  fun and educational trip. And during our factory visit, we understood how a lot of youngsters and foreigners are taking a keen interest in understanding fabrics and design better. That's great to know, as well.
