In a bizarre incident, police in Germany were left shocked and surprised after rushing to a scene of domestic violence only to find a man arguing with a parrot.

The police from the southern German town of Loerrach, near the Swiss border were called after a neighbour heard shouting from a next door apartment.

According to police the emergency caller said the heated dispute had been going on for some time.

However, when the officers arrived at the apartment on Monday, they found a 22-year-old man was locked in a heated rant at his girlfriend’s pet bird.

The man told the bird, which belonged to his girlfriend, had ruffled his feathers and he had taken out his rage in a loud shouting match with the animal.

The parrot responded to being shouted at with loud noises of its own. Police said it couldn't speak but could bark like a dog.

Fortunately no-one was hurt in the incident and the man was not charged.
