The birth of a child is reason for celebration but sometimes negligence can lead to horrifying consequences. Last year a story about a child pronounced dead waking up at a funeral was reported from India.

In another such story from Brazil a similar call almost led to a tragedy but fortunately the child was saved before it suffocated. The baby was dug out of a shallow grave where it had been buried for eight hours.

The family buried the child after incorrectly assuming that she had died at birth. Police expected to find a dead body when they started digging but were shocked to hear a whimper under the dirt.

After carefully scraping soil the police officers used their bare hands to shift it and pull out the baby girl. She was rushed to a hospital with paramedics clearing airways after which she was shifted to intensive care.

The police went to the family to investigate claims that they hadn’t reported the death of a new born child. They admitted that they failed to report as they were following traditional customs.
