If there’s one thing that comes to people’s minds when someone says “diabetes”, it’s “no sugar”. But reducing sugar intake isn’t the only aspect of diet for diabetes. Food that’s rich in fibre helps in slowing down the release of sugar in bloodstream. Most of these food items are easily available in Indian kitchens. Eating these local foods will help in managing diabetes:

Okra/ Bhindi

A favourite in a lot of Indian households, okra is non-starchy and has lots of fibres. Plus, it contains antioxidants and minerals that your body needs to keep diabetes in control. It also has a low glycemic index, which means it’s easy to digest. Bhindi is a good source of vitamin B and helps in regulating blood sugar levels.

Bitter gourd/ Karela

As the name suggests, karela has an extremely bitter taste. Most people crib about eating it (or just don’t eat at all). A few people however, relish karele ki sabji. It helps in weight loss, and is an excellent food for diabetics, because it contains a compound called Polypeptide-p or p-insulin which imitates insulin.

Radish/ Mooli

Diabetics can enjoy eating mooli ke parathe (thick Indian flat bread), because it’s a good source of fibre and helps in regulating blood sugar levels. Or, you can go for a vegetable salad, and add grated radish to it. Add some lemon juice for that extra zing. Radish soup is a good way to consume radish too.

Finger millet/ Ragi

Since rice contains a lot of carbohydrates, it’s advisable to cut down its intake. Consuming wheat isn’t advisable either. They can have ragi instead, which is a healthier alternative. Filled with fibre, calcium, and essential amino acids, it makes for a nutritious grain. Ragi dosa is a popular item. You can also try ragi aloo paratha.
