“Loving and caressing myself was an alien concept until I had a devastating break-up with the love of my life. Masturbating is liberating! It makes me feel that I am an independent woman who is not dependent on her man for satisfaction – physical or emotional. I feel complete and much more confident with the fact that I am self-sufficient” shares Madhu, 34 years (name changed).

Like Madhu, there are numerous other women sharing similar sentiments these days, today being World Masturbation Day. There is a direct link between societal connotations, as sexual liberation is crucial to a woman’s liberation in society. Masturbation is not just about physical gratification but has deep psychological implications. It goes beyond the concept of self-pleasure.

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Jayee Hospital, Noida, Dr Renu Jain says that psychologically masturbation is often linked with better cognitive abilities like memory and verbal frequency. It makes one more assured about their sexuality, boosting confidence and self-esteem.

She further adds, masturbation, definitely makes you feel happy and it is important to caress your own body and know more about your sensuality. It further, helps in increasing libido because the more you stimulate, the more you want to be stimulated. The more you masturbate the more you will fall in love with yourself and furthermore, enjoy sex and orgasm.

Masturbate with your partner:

Relationship counsellor Sumit Mehta, shares that one of the most liberating and enriching sexual acts which you can enjoy in the realms of your bedroom is to masturbate to orgasm in front of your lover. Does this sound intriguing? Sometimes the act of their girl play is much more sensually pleasing than sexual intercourse.

Doctors feel this is very important for the relationship to grow, to break the boundaries and develop a physical and psychological intimacy like never before.

Masturbating together can unravel whole new possibilities and add dimensions to your otherwise oh-so-boring conventional sex life. Your partner gets a chance to locate the hot-spots of your body while you enjoy and trigger it latter for heightened pleasure.

A hand on solo sex is a quick stress-buster and mood elevator when your partner is not around. You don’t have to depend on others for your happiness and satisfaction. All you need to do is explore the erogenous zones of your body and you are good to go.

Masturbation is absolutely valid despite the numerous social stigmas associated with it. Masturbation is a therapy that forms the base of your sex life and can help you prepare mentally and physically to before you get into the act with your partner.
