Diving into the depths of the ocean may sound fun but one also needs to be extremely careful before taking the plunge. The bends or decompression sickness affecting people while diving can cause joint pain and breathing problems, but in extreme conditions it can leave a person terribly deformed.

A fisherman in Peru suffered a shocking case of the bends after surfacing too quickly from a dive as his arms and hest ballooned. The man who dived to collect creatures from the sea floor has gained around 30 kg as doctors try to treat the deformity.

Rising too fast from the water caused the nitrogen in his blood to form grotesque bubbles as the gas swelled into sacks in his body leaving the man in pain. While the sickness has many symptoms, Alejandro’s case is said to be unique and could’ve been fatal.

Alejandro is now getting oxygen treatment in a pressurised chamber and doctors have managed to drain 30 percent of the nitrogen from his body. He is suffering from severe hypertension and can’t walk due to the pain.
