While awareness about the dangers of female genital mutilation is on the rise, there are many women that are yet suffering without being reported. A recent survey revealed that at least one genital mutilation among women is reported every hour in England, even after all the necessary measures have been implemented to deal with the issue.

According to a report in the Independent, the National Health Statistics (NHS) revealed that out of the thousands of women coming to be treated, there was one person with FGM every 92 minutes. There were also many girls who had undergone the procedure years ago and it wasn’t found by the doctors when tested earlier, which was really surprising. While there is constant awareness being raised regarding the subject, it is yet prevalent in many countries in the world. Though it has been illegal to carry out FGM’s in the UK since 1985, nobody has been prosecuted yet for the crime.

Sarah Champion, shadow secretary of state for women, said that unless there is a conviction in the country, it would not be treated as child abuse. While the UK has made better laws, there are not many that are being reported.
