Ruffles have been part of the history of fashion ever since the 16th century when Spanish soldiers wore them. Later on in the Elizabethan era, both men and women of high standing donned ruffles. Men wore them as bow-ties and women decorated their dresses with ruffles in the Victorian era. This season, ruffles had designers at the Lakme Fashion Week going ga-ga over them. From accessories to blouses to dupattas, ruffles have made their way into all aspects of fashion.

Going for a day out with girl pals? Sport a ruffle outfit. Designer Aisha Siddique says, “These days it is both sunny as well as rainy, therefore ruffles is perfect for the season. Ruffles gives a very retro, old world charm as well as a very feminine look.” On what’s new for this trend this season, designer Tanya Bhatt says, “Ruffles on accessories are fun. Bags and shoes sport ruffles too this season.”

Not leaving the desi side of fashion behind, designer Narmada Priyadarshini says, “Women nowadays do not prefer to have gold borders on their sarees anymore. They prefer to have ruffles on their blouses and as saree borders.” Not going overboard with ruffles is the key to nailing this trend. Aisha adds, “I would love to sport an A-line skirt with a ruffled blouse or high-waist trousers with ruffled shirt.” The ruffled blouse is definitely in vogue this season with many Bollywood celebrities sporting them. Narmada adds, “A ruffled blouse with a floral or plain chiffon saree is just what you need to make heads turn.”

Be understated with this trend — both in terms of accesories, make-up, hair and jewellery. Narmada says, “Since there is so much drama going on with ruffles, just sport a earring with the hair tied into a bun or styled in curls.”

Tanya concludes by stressing on the fact that one should not go overboard with ruffles by using ruffles both on the top and the bottom.
