Hollywood divas seem to be bold enough to up their hair game with colourful wigs.

Priyanka Chopra sported a wig for a recent photo shoot.

Hollywood’s love affair with wigs is here to stay. Every time award shows like the MET Gala or the MTV VMAs happen, the Internet is filled with stunning photographs of celebs flaunting colourful wigs. Blac Chyna, Kylie Jenner and Amber Rose are habitual wig wearers, sporting new looks every other day. More recently, Vanessa Hudgens too has been seen slaying wigs. In India, however, celebrities haven’t embraced the wig yet. Only Priyanka Chopra has modelled for a magazine’s photo shoot in a long blonde wig.

Hairstylist and makeup artist Sandy has an interesting tip for people who may be thinking of experimenting. “One’s personality should be kept in mind when planning to experiment with a wig. If a person is confident enough and if their personality is strong enough to carry off a bold coloured wig, they can go for it by all means. On Indian red carpets you don’t see this much because their priority is to look glamorous, not to make a fashion statement,” says Sandy.

However, celebrity hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani says that it is unfair to compare the West’s fashion sense to that of ours. “I haven’t styled anyone with wigs. I haven’t suggested that someone wear a wig either. Why would Indians want to go in for wigs when people have naturally thick hair here?” she questions.

Closer home, Hyderabad-based hairstylist and makeup artist Ayesha A.K. suggests a couple of tips to keep in mind. “A wig is a hassle-free solution. They may be slightly expensive, but they’re worth it. A thing to keep in mind, however, is the Indian skin tone. Go in for a colour that is just slightly different from your own hair. Instead of going for bright greens and blues, go for an ashy blond. I have styled people with wigs. It’s great for people with alopecia or extremely thin hair. I’ve even opted for wigs on brides. If the right wig is chosen and styled well, it can truly be a boon,” explains Ayesha.
