Wake up and smell the waffles

God knows that Mumbai could do with a fine waffle place. While a lot of breakfast places serve pancakes, waffles are difficult to come by, so you can imagine our delight when a place dedicated to this doughy treat sprung up in Fort. The aroma wafted through the air as we entered Wafflist to get breakfast on a weekday morning. We started with the Cookie Rookie — a waffle topped with fresh Oreo cookie cream. Needless to say, it’s a sugar rush, so expect a sweet blast with a fresh doughy base. We say doughy particularly because these waffles lack the crisp crunch of the regular kind, thanks to them being egg-less. So while our palate was a little confused with the first bite, the consecutive ones grew on us. One very nice thing about the place is that you can also make your own topping from the wide range of choices on offer. Next we went for a waffle that was half Nutty Buddy (Nutella chocolate topping) and half classic honey topping. We recommend the latter half if you’re there for breakfast, but by all means indulge if you’re here to treat your sweet tooth. All the waffles were rich and flavoursome — not to mention heavy, but what we would’ve liked better is a bit of a crunch.

There are some savoury treats as well — the waffle fries with four dips such as mayonnaise, sweet chilli etc. While the name is catchy, it is your regular potato wafer and is called waffle fry only because it resembles one. This didn’t particularly impress us, but if you’re one for dips, those are really nice and may be a good accompaniment to balance the sweetness. Another savoury thing on the menu is the rosti — a swiss delicacy made of grated potato patty, fried till it’s golden brown. The dish has a very subtle flavour and may interest you if you’re a taker for potatoes in all shapes and shades.

To drink on the side, we called for the chocolate chilli shots. Smooth at the fist sip, the shot trickles down to produce a burst of hot flavour — not too hot though. It’s an interesting drink, but opt for it only if you haven’t overdosed on chocolate already, or it may be difficult to appreciate the taste.

And to wash it all down, we had the ginger peach ice fizz — our favourite item on the menu. It was refreshing, much like the concept of the café.
