The great Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda passed away on October 9, at the age of 90, creating a ripple in the world across. In this month’s Movies at the Museum at Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the programme will commemorate the filmmaker by screening his Ashes and Diamonds/Popiól I diament (1959 Poland 103 mins). The film often finds its way into various ‘greatest films’ lists.

Set in Warsaw in the years after World War II, the film explores the nature of heroism and nationalism through the narrative of two former resistance fighters who have been given a mission to assassinate a local communist leader. The film is considered as one of the masterpieces of the Polish Film School, an informal group of filmmakers who used the relatively liberal climate post 1956 of communist Poland to critically examine the recent history of the nation.

The film will be introduced by filmmaker and cinematographer, Avijit Mukul Kishore who is also curator of the programme.

The screening is a part of Movies at the Museum, a monthly screening programme, curated Avijit Mukul Kishore, and architect and urban designer, Rohan Shivkumar.
