Tackling the same job, meeting familar faces day in and day out, wearing the same clothes — monotony sets in the quotidian life of a middle-class babu, rather easily. And, getting out of it seems almost impossible.

Zest! Agadich Shunya, a Marathi play conceptualised by Yugandhar Deshpande, is about two characters, who are at two different stages of their lives. After a seemingly life-altering incident, one of them (played by Akshay Shimpi) has successfully moved on and the other one (essayed by Amol Kulkarni) continues to be in the same zone. When one of them advances ahead in life, the other develops feelings of jealousy, resentment and envy. “After their mentor is no longer with them, Amol’s character cannot fathom living without him. The incident changes Amol,” Yugandhar, tells us.

The Marathi writer, with roots in Pandharpur, has written these two characters after much reflection. “I have wanted to write about a confused, conflicted character for a while. Amol’s character is in shock after losing his Guruji. He wants to move on in life like Akshay’s character has, but he cannot. It is this conflict that has been explored in the play,” he explains.
