The collapse of a flyover in Kolkata is symptomatic of general apathy to public works, glaringly so in West Bengal. The first phase of Calcutta Metro took 15 years to complete. The second Howrah bridge could hardly be used for five years after completion as the approach road from Howrah could not be fully operational due to land acquisition. This reflects a lack of professional work ethos. A thorough structural audit of the flyover and its completion on war footing should be the only concern now.
