It is indeed heartening to note there are still judges who feel for the masses, as witnessed in Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur’s plea in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting recruitment of more judges to reduce the number of pending cases. But it should be noted that the problem is not merely of strength but also of procedure. The judiciary needs to prioritise and also decline cases that are a clear waste of time. It must also reach common ground with the Centre over the appointment of fellow judges to realise Chief Justice Thakur’s request.
