It is very saddening to know that the Supreme Court had to interfere and direct the executive towards swift action on the prolonged drought in the country. The drought was forecast last year but the government did little to mitigate its effects. The media, too, ignored this crisis for long but has picked it up now because its impact has moved from villages to urban India. The need of the hour is to declare a national emergency and ensure that at least potable water is made available in drought-hit areas.
