Leave the EC out

It is election time in West Bengal and one can comprehend the endless criticism, offensives and lobbed at each other by politicians. But dragging the Election Commission of India, an autonomous constitutional authority, into this is not fair. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the EC is working on the instructions of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She attacked the EC after it show-caused her for violation of the model code of conduct. Ms Banerjee’s attempt to demean the EC reeks of desperation.
