Coming after the news of a dalit couple being killed for a paltry sum of '15, the news of a policeman beating two labourers to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri shows that the law in India’s most populous state has gone to the dumps. The men were killed because they refused to pay a bribe of '100. Merely firing the policeman will not do. These instances, along with those of communal disharmony in the past, show that the current political party in power must be voted out in next year’s Assembly elections to restore the rule of law in the state.
