Indian citizens’ passions are intertwined with the country’s cricketing fortunes, which was visible in the stand-off between Kashmiri and outstation students at the National Institute of Technology in Srinagar on April 7 after local students cheered India’s loss to West Indies during the World T20 semi-final. At the heart of the NIT conflict is a rhetorical tussle between nationalisms — Kashmiri and Indian — and clearly azad Kashmiri voices are in majority. But students should understand that they’re at the institute to study. They should learn to live with the differences between them instead of letting political passions fester and stall the university.
