An icon passes

The death of eminent author and social activist Mahasweta Devi is a big loss. The author, who used her writings to raise her voice for the marginalised and dedicated her work to the welfare of tribal people, died in Kolkata after a short illness. The Jnanpith, Padma Vibhushan and Magsaysay awardee will be remembered not only for her outstanding contribution to the literary field but also for her empathetic and sensitive portrayal of conflict.
