Son of a Pakistani immigrant who drove buses, Sadiq Khan becoming mayor of London provides hope to the Labour Party, showing that not all is lost since the leadership shifted to Jeremy Corbyn last year. Mr Khan, from the Muslim minority community, has been elected mayor at a time that Europe faces a Syrian refugee crisis and France has been the victim of terrorist violence, crises that have generated a deep paranoia vis-à-vis Muslims in London.
