The appointment of Vijay Rupani as Gujarat chief minister may be a cause for jubilation within Gujarat, but it signals that the BJP has not learnt anything from the past. The BJP seems hell bent on retaining Gujarat for the sake of Prime minister Narendra Modi’s prestige. Further, Mr Rupani’s shakha roots and his appointment at a juncture when Gujarat will soon have Assembly elections, spells bad omen for the state and our country’s moral fabric. The last time a non-Patel became Gujarat chief minister, the state paid a heavy price for it.
