Rohith Vemula, a Ph.D. scholar at the University of Hyderabad who was suspended last year for assaulting an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist, committed suicide on Sunday. By depriving him of his hostel berth and rusticating him temporarily, the university victimised him for his political views. The university must inquire thoroughly into his death and ensure that taming campus politics doesn’t amount to depriving a scholar of academic rights.
