Had locals in Kollam, Kerala, paid heed to a woman’s opposition to fireworks at the Puttingal temple, the fire that claimed more than 100 lives could have been averted. Instead, the complainant, on whose initiative the fireworks were banned and that order eventually violated — was often threatened by hooligans. While community celebrations are welcome, temples and citizens’ bodies should ensure adequate precautions are taken before organising such events.
