The decision to increase the retirement age of doctors from 58 to 65 by the government of Haryana cannot be appreciated. While it is discriminatory towards other government employees, it is bound to further deteriorate health services in state-run institutions along with extra burden on the state exchequer. This step by the government to cover up the shortage of doctors with keeping and benefiting the old guard while denying job opportunities to fresh doctors is unjustified too. If the non-availability of fresh MBBS is considered true, the state can utilise the services of the integrated doctors, who are fully competent to take care of general OPDs more efficiently and sincerely.
