Ghulam Ali to perform in Kolkata

Accepting chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s invitation, Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali will perform in Kolkata on January 12. This was announced by Trinamul Congress MP and national spokesperson Derek O’ Brien on Tuesday. “Ghulam Ali and his son to perform in the city on Jan 12 at Park Circus Maidan,” he tweeted.

In October, Mr Ali’s concert in Mumbai was cancelled due to Siva Sena’s threat. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had immediately invited Ali to perform, offering to host his programme in Kolkata. “Ghulam Aliji’s concert can be held in Kolkata. We will make all arrangements”, Ms Banerjee, who was then in Bhutan, had then tweeted.

Later, in some of her public speeches, Ms Banerjee had cited the cancellation of Ghulam Ali’s concert in Mumbai as another instan-ce of “ intolerance.”

After the Kolkata concert, Ghulam Ali will travel to Kerala to perform at Thiruvananthapuram.
