SC refuses to hear Kanhaiya's bail plea, asks him to move appropriate court

'Why did you not go to High Court', Supreme Court asks Kanhaiya Kumar on his petition.

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to hear the bail plea of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested under the sedition charge by the Delhi Police last week. Kanhaiya was sent to 14-day judicial custody by Patiala House court on Wednesday.

12.05 am: Supreme Court asked the government to ensure safety and security of the counsel representing different parties.

11.55 am: Supreme Court allowed Kanhaiya's lawyer to amend the petition. The top court also asked the Delhi High Court to expeditiously hear the bail plea of Kanhaiya Kumar.

11.50 am: The top court directed the matter to the Delhi High Court, after it asked Kanhaiya's lawyers why they did not approach an appropriate court for his bail. His lawyers informed the court that he was not safe there.

11.45 am: Supreme Court refused to hear the bail plea of Kanhaiya Kumar, asking the petitioners why they did not approach the Delhi Court.

Kanhaiya, in his petition on Thursday, moved the Supreme Court for bail and release from custody under Article 32 of the Constitution, saying \"fear for the safety of life and limb\" at the Delhi sessions court had compelled him to approach the apex court directly for release.

Earlier, a panel of lawyers, comprising senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Rajeev Dhawan, Dushyant Dave, Harin Raval and advocate A D N Rao, submitted a report in a sealed cover including a pen drive on mobile phone recordings of the violence at the sessions court.
